The Gracious Words from Nazareth 6/15

 The Gracious Words from Nazareth

Jesus stood in His hometown synagogue. He unrolled the scroll of Isaiah and read about the Messiah's mission. Then He sat down and declared that He Himself was the fulfillment of that prophecy. The people were amazed by His gracious words. They wondered at the message coming from the mouth of a man they thought they knew.

Their initial amazement quickly turned to skepticism. They began to whisper, "Isn't this Joseph's son?" Their familiarity with Jesus as a neighbor and a carpenter blinded them to His true identity as the Son of God. They knew about His family and His trade, but they failed to recognize His divine purpose. Knowledge about Jesus is not the same as knowing Jesus personally.

Many of us have grown up hearing the stories of Jesus. We can recite verses and know the routines of church life. This familiarity can create a dangerous distance, making us spectators of a message meant to transform us. We listen to the words but resist their claim on our lives. What truth about Jesus have you become so familiar with that you no longer let it change you?

“And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?” (Luke 4:22, KJV)

Prayer: Ask God to give you fresh eyes to see Jesus beyond your preconceptions and routines.

Challenge: Read Luke 4:16-21 aloud and note one phrase that strikes you as if you are hearing it for the first time.
